This central Queensland community was facing an uncertain future. Considered a ‘town with a mine’, it’s mine was due for closure, resulting in a significant drop in the local economy.

Through the help of community development funding they were able to undertake an academic study of the options for future development. The report was comprehensive, but was so comprehensive the community appointed committee was unsure on how to go about implementation.

5d was engaged to design and run a series of sessions with the committee to help them structure the insights from the report and the local representation into a clear and implementable strategy.

Through our strategic conversations approach we were able to build shared intent around what needed to be done to sustain the town. The headline representation of this is their Strategy on a Page .

This community based initiative has now achieved national and international recognition, winning runner up at the National Economic Development Awards in 2011.

The strategy has been co-presented with Rio Tinto at the North Qld Local Government Association Conference and to a meeting of Rio Tinto Global Communities Practitioners.

The presentation is an integral part of the program for 3 AusAid Study Tours, providing information to government representatives from African countries.

5d has an ongoing relationship with the town to help review and support their progress.
